Dracula is way cooler than Edward!
After we talked about Twilight in the last class, it made me start wondering why trends become popular in the first place. I have liked/loved/obsessed over many popular trends in my life (including but not limited to: Hanson, Spice Girls (had all the Barbies), Furbies (so creepy), plaid, etc.) It's strange to think of how and why some things become so incredibly popular while others fall flat. A year or two ago, High School Musical was all the rage. Though it's still certainly popular, it seems as though this new vampire trend has taken over. Twilight's one of the most popular franchises since Harry Potter, True Blood is one of the most popular HBO shows ever, and the Vampire Diaries is getting good reviews and ratings despite it's tough competition. So what will be next? And how can anyone ever really gauge whether or not something is going to be a huge success? Is there a formula to becoming a pop icon or is it pure luck? High School Musical and Twilight, though of completely different nature, both featured young, attractive heartthrobs, and concepts that many can easily relate to (besides the whole singing out every single thought and being a vampire/werewolf thing....) So what made them so popular? Is it the yearning for the unattainable world and love that these films show that make people so drawn to them? I'm really just wondering peoples opinions because I can't really figure it out. I personally have no desire to have a vampire boyfriend or to sing out "Hello! How are you?" instead of just saying it. I also am curious as to what you all think about trends "cycling" back around. This can be seen in clothing trends like bell bottoms (not as popular now but still) and even film trends like with Twilight. Dracula was incredibly sucessful when it came out in the 30's (the film, not the novel) and it shares a lot of the same characteristics as Twilight (sex appeal, love/troubled relationship, fantasy). What other trends have come and gone and come back around?
I'll leave you with these two videos! The first is basically a parody about what life would be like if Twilight and High School Musical were one film. The second is the MTV Twilight parody.
LASTLY, I hope everyone is okay from the flooding (AKA GSU CANCEL SCHOOL PLEASE!!). I'm building an ark if you guys want to hop on.

I have to admit I was part of the creepy furby generation.... I still remember that at night when it got hungry it would talk to me: "ehhhh hungryyyy...ehhh". So creepy. I also remember liking tamagochis, jumpsuits, Pokemon, and I still think some bellbottoms are cute haha. I feel like to be an ongoing trend you have to have mere luck. I mean look at Britney Spears, she was SUPER popular, then she got slutty and her main demographic.. CHILDREN were turned off by their parents and she dissapeared for a while after some failed attempts to come back strong. It wasn't until her album "Blackout" that she had a hit single without having to tour or do any major publicity for it. So she got lucky. With Circus she already had gotten some momentum from Blackout and got lucky again.... perhaps because some of the Blackout songs were in the Circus album? Just a thought.
Toamagochis have dissapeared forverer.. so sad. Popular toys and games coem and go, even though I still think that Clue is an awesome game.
Going back to out last lecture when we were talkign about the Sims, I feel the the LIFE board game that came out when I was in middle school gave birth to the whole "virtual life" thing. Being able to chose what you do and what you work in and what you own is a pretty cool thing to use as a past time.
Now, speaking about the vampire films and tv series, they have almost always been popular, and have been adapted to the developing generations. Horror and vampire filsm started in German cinema way back in the day. They became popular because they used geometrical distortion. Thats why Frankenstein and Dracula were soo tall and weird looking for example. Germans started the whole fantasy-make up thing as well. When Hollywood saw that it worked, they stole the idea by buying the german films and made a new formula for vampire films. The "horror", and the "unknown world" topic has always been popular since the average American will never encounter such experience.
I feel that one tendency that is comign back, and STRONGLY is the whole "lets make a musical into a movie guys!" . And even though I am guilty of loving Mamma Mia! (just because I adore Meryl Streep), I think its over done. Grease and other classics are cool, but the fact that hollywood is just remaking books, musicals and old movies shows a sign of a creativity drought.
ps: an ark is a fantastic idea! and I am still crossing my fingers for classes getting cancelled. ah. one can only dream

Re: Dracula is way cooler than Edward!
Speaking of the eternal recurrence and current prevalence of vampire motifs in pop culture and the arts --
Has anybody here seen Let The Right One In? It's a Swedish movie that came out last year... right before Twilight came along and stole some of its vampire thunder. You could say it explores a few of the same themes, but in a pretty drastically different way. And with a less squeamish portrayal of what it is, exactly, that vampires are supposed to do with those pointy chompers.
One of my favorite movies. One of this decade's best, I'd say.
Unfortunately, an American/English-language remake of it is already in the works. Which will probably screw up everything good about the original.

No but I'll have to check that out. Anything but Twilight. Although Robert Pattinson is good looking.... still! I can't handle the seemingly 20 minute pause between them kissing! Thats when I gave up on watching that movie.
I do agree vampires have always been a popular theme but not as much as right now. Of course there have been vampire films throughout history and even shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer etc. But, right now it seems to be more popular than ever. I mean, after Buffy ended, it seems as though Twilight has been the first vampire film of any "popularity" that has come out. And since Twilight, as we've all seen, vampire themes are all over TV and in films. It's nuts! It's not that I'm against a vampire trend or anything, I just never thought it'd be this popular. However, I do give Twilight, like Harry Potter, credit for making people have the desire to read again whether it's literature I particularly want to read or not. I think any reason to cause an excitement about reading is a good thing especially in the age of technology where sitting online at 2:30 in the morning while watching Babes of Toyland because your roommates forgot to pay your cable bill is just too easy (wait... what? this isn't about me, I swear... haha) and reading seems too difficult.
And Hollywood in general is the epitome of a formula driven industry that works solely through reproductions of a few main concepts. (Boy meets girl, theres a conflict, boy and girl end up together) (Monster/Evil dude terrorizes unsuspecting victims who are incredibly dumb and don't see the obvious signs of trouble. Main victim survives through human instinct while the rest die gorey deaths and are half-naked (or naked, which is a new thing and really icky in my opinion)) (Detective has a hunch about a criminal and chases the criminal down). It's all the same crap. Whether a movie is an actual remake or not, in Hollywood, it's basically a remake no matter what. Even though there wasn't an original "How to lose a guy in 10 days", there were 40 movies before it that had the same exact formulation with minor plot changes.
Anyway, my ark idea didn't seem to work and my poor baby car got eaten by the murky water monster. Aka it took me 500 dollars to fix the water damange done to it. THANKS A LOT GEORGIA AND YOUR APOCALYPSE-ESQUE WEATHER.

I also have been wondering why vampires are all the rage right now. Does it have to do with the economy? Are we all feeling sucked dry from bad economic news, bailed-out fat cat bankers, and a huge federal deficit that will adversely affect our future? Or are we in need of romance? Vampires have always been seductive, and if the love is forbidden, all the better. A long time ago, I fell for Barnabus Collins in Dark Shadows. I hear Johnny Depp bought the rights to the show and is planning a movie with Tim Burton. Now THAT I can't wait to see.

Re: Dracula is way cooler than Edward!
I don't get the vampire craze either. I think it's just something that pops up and people start to follow it, then more and more do because they don't want to be left out.
I watched True Blood in Season 1 because I'm a huge fan of Alan Ball. The ratings weren't great and I didn't know many people that watched it, but it was a great show.
Now in Season 2, it got so popular and EVERYONE was talking about it. I think that ends up happening because the more people talk about something, the more people don't want to be "left out" of the conversation, so they join in too. I even saw NFL players tweeting about it after each episode. And it wasn't even nearly as good as it was in Season 1, but people at it up because it was popular. Just like Nip/Tuck and Family Guy, which have strangely gotten more popular the worse they get.

Re: Dracula is way cooler than Edward!
That seems to happen a lot. Things get more popular and become "cool" and then quality goes out the window. Maybe that speaks to what the "mainstream" wants? Maybe people give up quality to fit in? I've never really thought about it but, that seems to happen with everything. A band or artist gets super popular and often their next album is awful but ends up being played all over the radio/tv just because they're already popular so people just assume that it'll be good.
