hollyyy CRAP!!!!!!!!! I was wondering what the frenzy on everyone's statuses on facebook about kanye were. What the heck was he thinking?! I am not a fan of Taylor Swift but who does that? You have to give her credit, and she is pretty good so he should stop hating on er, even Beyonce was all shocked and embarassed. WOW that comes to show what new money does to people...

Yeah I mean as far as I'm concerned, it has nothing to do with the music. I've never seen Swift's video or Beyonce's, and I don't listen to either artist. But it's not about that. Swift won and she deserved her moment, especially it being her first such award at such a young age. Kanye's behavior was ridiculous.

Yeah he's an idiot. He did this before at the European video awards when he thought he shouldve won instead of Justice. He did the same crap and came up on the stage and took the mic and said he should've won. He's just a jerk. He says it's because he's an "emotional artist" so he does things without thinking but really he's just disrespectful, arrogant, and lame!

Well --

If Kanye was most people, he would've waited out the rest of the show and blogged later on (probably in all caps, knowing him) regarding his opinions on the matter. But Kanye West is not most people, and he has no such patience -- so he stormed the stage instead. Essentially, here we have him once again exhibiting some of the same character flaws that made him such a compelling performer from the start.
Do you guys not remember that he dropped out of college and named his first album accordingly because, as he said in "School Spirit," he had to "wait a year, wait a year" for everything he wanted?
Have you forgotten his admission in "Addiction" that "everything they told me not to is exactly what I would"?
So, to an extent, I don't see why this outburst is/was particularly surprising.
He has always embodied a dichotomy of everyman & curio; pious believer & incorrigible sinner; cultural benchmark & pariah, etc.

I think he either felt a total sweep of the awards on the part of Taylor Swift coming on, or otherwise thought that something was being taken from Beyonce, and jumped the gun in her defense, in defense of the "REAL POP CULTURE" he claimed to be a fan of in the rather confusing apology he wrote later that night -- which has since been taken down and replaced with a more concise, sensible, non-all-caps one.
It's the same dogged foolhardiness that bade him speak "George Bush does not care about black people."
And it did made him look pretty stupid in this instance when not only did his little interjection not go as he had apparently planned it, but Beyonce did in fact go on to win Video of the Year, just as Kanye was ostensibly trying to say she deserved to do. And then she invited young Ms. Swift back on stage... making Mr. West look even more like the bad guy in this situation.

So, in this respect, you might say that he has good taste (when it came to how the main awards were doled out)...but just lacks some common sense in dealing with people.

Of course, the scenario of his impromptu protest is ludicrous anyway. The awards were decided by popular vote. In making his statement, was he really trying to convince someone/anybody?
Maybe. I don't know how productive speculating as to his intentions is. (Did you see how much of that Hennessy he'd downed?)
He didn't realize that nobody really needed convincing; his disruption was unnecessary.

His behavior is reminding me of some of the discussions I heard and had with various people after Michael Jackson's death about the separations between art and artist.

I could never completely dismiss anyone who made an album as great as The College Dropout or Late Registration. And those of you who are ready to completely dismiss him -- and can't understand that his behavior is part and parcel of the creative consciousness that made him the most original and interesting artist in the building, I'd wager, at the moment he ran up on the stage -- are missing out on a chance to put some thought into what really makes up a thought-provoking artist.

Not that being talented gave him the right to do what he did. (Though I think it's worth noting [more as a comment on the state of MTV and mainstream culture than as a defense of Kanye's behavior] that the "incident" is really the only thing that made me sort of wish I had watched the VMAs.) I'm just proposing that that exact same obliviousness to -- or at least disregard for -- the normal boundaries of a given situation has served him well in his music.

Yeah, he crossed a line he shouldn't have. But I find it really weird to be honest that the tide of public opinion seems to be against Kanye in greater measure than it was against that phony, overgrown putz Chris Brown after he beat the shit out of Rihanna. Since when does one man's inebriated impertinence trump another's brutishly pulverizing his girlfriend?

When you really look into what's going on here, I think it opens up a very interesting dialogue about the occasional discrepancy between life well-lived and art worth making. It's a conversation I wish more people were engaging in at the moment.

Having an artistic sensibility and creative drive may lead artists to think outside the established norms of society, and hopefully come up with something new and groundbreaking. But being a genius is not an excuse for bad behavior, whether that’s beating up a girl, molesting a child, or just plain being rude and obnoxious during someone else’s moment in the spotlight.

I love Kanye's music but he definitely made a butt of himself. It's funny how one person does something ignorant and people try to connect it to someone else or some other meaningful event. Like the politician (I believe) who got up and spoke ignorantly and disrespectfully towards President Obama. They tried to say that Kanye was "standing up" for the President. :-| What Kanye did was ignorant and had it been anyone else he would have politely been escorted outside...or thrown a bottle or chair at...probably by me.

I am happy that Kanye is gracious enough to let Atlanta finish raining. It is crazy how something like this completely consumes the media. There are horrible/incredible things happening all over the world that are worthy of media coverage. But we would much rather see Kanye's douchebaggery for some reason. Like I mentioned in class, I despise celebrity gossip. Not because "im too good for the popular", but because I personally do not find it amusing. However, things like this make me laugh.

Also, I know that it was definitely rude and disrespectful to interrupt Ms. Swift receiving her award...but WHO CARES? Unfortunately, my voice is not enough to stop the machine. I hope, however, that my will is strong enough to abstain from being engulfed in it.

I do not know if you guys heard but there is an audio clip floating around the internet of Obama being interviewed. One of the questions asked addressed the Kanye dilemma. Short story shorter, Obama called Kanye a jackass. I found that way more funny.
