Social Media: Killing True Connections?

What is social media / technology doing to us? I was in the theatre the other night waiting for the movie to start, when I noticed groups of people that were sitting together, but NONE of them were talking to each other. They were all texting other folks, or facebooking/tweeting, or playing games on their phones, or listening to music on their Ipods. It struck me as kinda weird. On one hand this technology is bringing us all together more easily, but at the same time it's totally isolating! When I'm with friends and they spend the whole time texting someone else, I have to say, I feel offended. Are we losing the ability to be present in our (actual) lives? Or to converse with a live person?
