Fandom in Politics? Empty Fandom in Politics?

Post by rook417 Thu Feb 14, 2008 1:22 pm

We constantly speak of fandom in popular culture but I think that with elections later this year we are clearly seeing fandom in the realm of politics. Clearly politics has ventured in to popular culture. What do yall think?

Absolutely! Someone finally brought it up. I am very active in politics and have seen this trend. Barack Obama has got to be the trendiest candidate I have ever seen. People re following him just to say that they are following him. He has not backed up his statements with any plans yet. Fandom and trendiness is definitely alive and well within American politics.

Fandom in Politics? Empty Re: Fandom in Politics?

Deeply disturbed seems to be the trend for me today; I am deeply disturbed by this video. This is a really good point Heath. Clinton (Bill, that is) had a similar effect on people (strangely). He had the youth thing going, and he played the saxophone on the Arsenio Hall Show (does anyone remember him?), which became a central part of the campaign (bizarre). In fact, I just Wikipedia-ed (that's a hard one to verb) it, and the wording there is this: "Bill Clinton pioneered the use of pop culture in campaigning. . " That may be a bit of an overstatement, but it does seem to be a turning point. I wonder if the use of pop culture is more evident in the Dems or if it is just that the kind of pop culture used is different for each party. What do you guys think?

I think the correct verb is "Wiki'ed," but I could be wrong.

I am going to second Wikied. And Obama definitely seems to have them most intense political cult following so far this election. I don't think i have actually seen one of his ads with him speaking, its always that hot chick's voice "Obama is the person of change, blah blah blah." (Really aren't they all the voice of change, otherwise what would be the point running?)

Yeah but I heard Obama shits rainbows and puppies. Puppies! Come on!

No in all seriousness though I was ready to write off Huckabee as a evangelical super right-wing SOB until he did those spots on Colbert. I still wouldn't vote for him or support any of his policies but now I respect him more as a human being.

I am a Huckabee fan and voted for him. I know he will not get the Republican nomination but I did my part.

I would not be surprised if I was the only "Conservative" or "Republican" in the class. It is a fact that I have come to live with. Haha.

Huckabee's really working the late-night circuit. Could he be the most EXTREME (tm) candidate of the election season?

EDIT: Also, that's got to be the crispest resolution I've seen on Youtube yet. Good going, senor.
