Grunge is BACK!
So I mentioned in class yesterday that 90's grunge is making a comeback and you all looked at me like I was crazy. So here are some pictures from recent fashion shows, if anyone cares:

Re: Grunge is BACK!
Oh, and I know I'm probably the only person here that watches America's Next Top Model (religiously), but I'd just like to point out that in the preview for next week's episode, the girls are shown posing as "homeless people" for a fashion photo shoot. Is this Zoolander-style Derelicte? No, it looks a lot more like Kurt Cobain-style grunge.
I know ANTM isn't really the word in fashion, but it is a fashion TV show. So I just thought it was interesting that they were featuring grunge clothing when we were (or I was) just talking about this in class.

Zoolander-style DERELICTE would have rocked so hard. So hard.

Re: Grunge is BACK!
The coming-of-age-in-the-90s in me is intrigued by this trend. The dressing as homeless people on ANTM is disturbing on so many levels. And while I am not a religious viewer, I do tune in from time to time. Thanks for the fashion stuff, Emily; I'm glad we have a resident expert in this field (clearly, I am not).

Re: Grunge is BACK!
Oh, I agree. I could write a whole book on how disturbingly inappropriate some of the shoots on ANTM are (and maybe I will). For instance, that one where they all posed as girls that had been brutally murdered in one way or another.
I really hope everyone starts dressing like they did in My So-Called Life because, frankly, that TV show is very special to me, even if the fashions are totally ridiculous.
I <3 you, Jared Leto.

Re: Grunge is BACK!
I was sorely, sorely vexed at the music video for "From Yesterday."
I just. I don't get it

Oh, see, to me, Jared Leto = Jordan Catallano.
I don't know about any of this 30 Seconds to Mars crap. I choose to remain blissfully ignorant.

Re: Grunge is BACK!
BTW, for those of you who say the looks above do not look "grunge" to you, I:
1. Question how old you were in the early 90's.
2. Question your knowledge of fashion.
3. Will ask you to compare the picture from My So-Called Life with the images above.
4. Will ask you to remember that revivals of old fashion trends are never exactly like the original fashion trend. But they are interpretations of the trend. Marc Jacobs flat-out said he was interpreting grunge in one of the collections pictured above.

Re: Grunge is BACK!
"Those of you" referring to me, I guess.
I hung out with teenagers a lot in New Orleans (I was four, five). I don't know why hip teenagers want to hang out with a FOB kindergartener but they did, and it was all black t-shirts, bad hair, ripped jeans, and plaid sweaters wrapped around the waist.
So who determines how fashion is categorized? Fashion designers are the sole authority on what style can be called grunge? Being an expert on firearms does not make you a Marine sniper. Reading the Kama Sutra obsessively does not make you a pick-up artist.
Trust me on that one.
You're drawing from one source there, Marc Jacobs. That's one fashion designer out of I don't want to know how many. I wouldn't call that a revival movement. Having said all that, I agree, the 90's look is coming back. I think pre-ripped jeans first started appearing in 2003, 2004? When I first saw them on sale at Macy's I had a "Hmm, what does this remind me of?" moment.

Re: Grunge is BACK!
I also provided examples from Chanel and ANTM. Make Me A Supermodel also did a grunge catwalk show a couple of episodes back, but I was too lazy to get the pictures.
Believe me, dude. I know what I'm talking about.

You have an odd way of agreeing with people, then.
Here, because I am avoiding doing school work, I am uploading some pictures from that Make Me A Supermodel catwalk:

Re: Grunge is BACK!
They also referred to these looks as specifically "grunge" on the show.
Of course these are "fashion" interpretations of street clothes, so it's not exactly like original 90's grunge. But I think the influence is undeniably there.

I did say that before. Look to my numbered response a few posts back.
I get really emotional about fashion.
